‘Everyone should work in hospitality at least once in their
life.’
Why? Because some people have significant misconceptions when it comes
to one of the world’s largest and oldest industries. It’s about time to clarify
some of these false impressions.
Firstly, one of the biggest misbeliefs has to be that anyone
can work in hospitality as it’s easy and requires no skills whatsoever. To
put it mildly - this is not the case.
The working environment in hospitality is characterised as fast-paced,
stressful and demanding. It takes drive, passion as well as mental and physical
strength in order to flourish within the industry.
Another myth is that the working
hours in some hospitality jobs are very relaxed. You sleep in, get up around noon and
start work nice and late.
Some think that late starts are awesome, but forget that a late start also
means a late finish. So dancing the night away with your friends may be a
distant memory!

Of course you can’t forget about one of the biggest
misconceptions – that when mistakes happen, a
lot of customers think that restaurant staff are incapable, incompetent or
simply don’t care. Mistakes are often a result of miscommunications
- remember we’re humans, not robots … so it’s
okay to slip up now and again!
Lastly, let’s give the business owners some credit. Some
people think that owning a successful restaurant means living an easy
and carefree life and taking all the earnings without having to do any hard
work.
The truth is that getting to the point of owning a profitable business requires
years of dedication, taking financial risks and
blurring the lines of work/life balance.
If you’ve never worked in hospitality, impress your friends
who have with your newly gained knowledge and understanding – they’ll love you for it … whilst they roll their eyes at you!
